I think this meme is a little absurd, living as we do in a classless society. But it’s something to post and I haven’t posted in weeks and months, so I’ll bite.
Father went to college
Yes
Father finished college
Yes, and a Master’s degree - maybe two Master’s degrees.
Mother went to college
Yes
Mother finished college
Yes, and she too finished her Master’s program.
Have any relative who is an attorney, physician, or professor
I have an uncle who is a music professor in MS, and I’ve heard of a great aunt who is a damn lawyer but I don’t remember her face.
Were the same or higher class than your high school teachers
Wtf mate? My parent’s probably brought home more money than my high school teachers, but that’s not difficult to do in MS. My professors at MSMS had varied background - some rich and retired, some young and living in trailers , but since then I’ve learned that we all drink the same beer, so I don’t know.
Had more than 50 books in your childhood home
Oh yeah, see the next question
Had more than 500 books in your childhood home
More. Dad had thousands of books when I was growing up. On the island, Mom and Dad owned a house and Dad used the parsonage as a library. That was 3,000 sq. ft. or more of back to back bookshelves nine feet tall packed and sagging. At home we had the same kinds of shelves in the den, and later in most of the other rooms as well. Good memories.
Were read children’s books by a parent
Yep. The Chronicles of Narnia, The Santa Clause Letters, Where the Wild Things Are, Beatrix Potter stories, the original Grimm’s fairy tales, Scary Stories for Rotten Kids. Those were my favorites. When I got older they’d read to me from whatever book I was reading at the time. I don’t remember reading books to them very often, though I do remember reading random chunks of my books aloud.
Had lessons of any kind before you turned 18
Piano lessons and Tae Kwon Do and Judo and various martial arts with implements.
Had more than two kinds of lessons before you turned 18
Music and Killing. So just two.
The people in the media who dress and talk like me are portrayed positively
It’s a mixed bag. I dress and talk like a nerd, but like a WASP nerd. So it depends on the sitcom.
Had a credit card with your name on it before you turned 18
I didn’t want to use credit cards until recently, so I don’t remember having one. However, my dad was a cosigner on my first card, so that may have been because I was under 18. I don’t remember; I used my debit card almost exclusively until a couple of years ago.
Your parents (or a trust) paid for the majority of your college costs
No, I paid for college myself with scholarships and work.
Your parents (or a trust) paid for all of your college costs
As above.
Went to a private high school
MSMS is a public high school, so no, but it has an advanced curriculum and a boarding school environment.
Went to summer camp
Band camp and church camp, but not ever year.
Had a private tutor before you turned 18
Nah. Didn’t need one.
Family vacations involved staying at hotels
Sometimes. Mostly we visited family when we vacationed, so we stayed in their guest rooms.
Your clothing was all bought new before you turned 18
I don’t think all of it was, but most of it.
Your parents bought you a car that was not a hand-me-down from them
No
There was original art in your house when you were a child
Some photography. Aerials of Mt. Rainier and Deception Pass. Some neat shots Dad took on Sauk Mt.
Had a phone in your room before you turned 18
Yes
You and your family lived in a single family house
Most of the time, yes. We lived in a duplex for a while once, and in an apartment for a little while after that.
Your parent(s) owned their own house or apartment before you left home
Yes
You had your own room as a child
90% of the time, yes.
Participated in an SAT/ACT prep course
Yeah, that got me up to Nat’l Merit range.
Had your own TV in your room in High School
My parents let me move the tiny TV we had when I was born into my room before I left for MSMS. We weren’t allowed to have TVs at MSMS, which I how I learned to stream TV from the ‘Net.
Owned a mutual fund or IRA in High School or College
I bought an IRA in college. I haven’t funded it since; that’s almost a New Year’s instigation.
Flew anywhere on a commercial airline before you turned 16
Yeah, on those visiting-family vacations. I flew to CA on an FBLA trip once, I think I was 16 that year.
Went on a cruise with your family
No, Mom and Dad went without me.
Went on more than one cruise with your family
I’ve never been on a cruise. I’m not sure they appeal to me, either.
Your parents took you to museums and art galleries as you grew up
Yes. I didn’t appreciate art museums when I was young, but they did take me. I remember being dragged through commercial art galleries on the peninsula and hating it, but now I like doing going and looking so I guess they planted a good seed. I’ve always loved science museums, but they seem to be themed to people the age I used to be so I get somewhat less from them now.
You were unaware of how much heating bills were for your family
No, I was always interested in money and how it flowed, so I knew what our bills were and how to reconcile them with our accounts and how to stay out of Mom’s way when she was doing that and out of Dad’s way when he was filing our taxes. I didn’t appreciate then how hard it is to stick to a budget and how much effort it takes to spend thriftily rather than frivolously. I have learned; thanks Mom and Dad.
