Spore will be released Sep. 7th, 2008! Will be available on PC, Mac, DS, Wii, and mobile phone according to Wikipedia. I don’t know how the mobile phone version will work, and I don’t care. What I’d really like is a 360 version, just so I can play it in HD. Maybe the Wii will get a system update to make my dreams come true in the meantime.

Television a victim of global warming
Wednesday, October 17th, 2007Fashion a Victim of Global Warming (12 Oct 2007 – NY Times, via Stuff.co.nz)
The founder of Milan Fashion Week, Beppe Modenese, told the New York Times:
The fashion system must adapt to the reality that there is no strong difference between summer and winter any more. You can’t have everyone showing four times a year to present the same thing.
He’s right, of course, and I’m concerned that this trend is also turning up in network television programming. Summer is lingering into Fall; we had a few days of cool weather this week, but now it’s hot again. Likewise, the Fall TV season has kicked off on some networks, but not others. Showtime has started their new season of shows; Heroes is back on; Comedy Central even started airing new Southpark episodes back in March they were so confused. Last year LOST had that six week break in the middle of the season. They film in Hawaii and the fall even caught them by surprise. I hope the television industry learns to adapt to the new climate conditions soon. I don’t care for these stuttered seasons.
Fire Alarm and Cross County Biking
Saturday, October 6th, 2007Someone pulled the building’s fire alarm at 12:30 this morning. I was still awake, of course. There was no fire; it was probably those punk kids who keep pounding on my door in the middle of the night. I practiced getting the cats into their carrier and outside, so it was a productive interruption.
I went biking this morning for several hours. A guy from work and I went to the Wakefield park to try out their trails. We started out on a mountain-bike trail that was uphill both ways. Crazy, right? My bike was not built for that kind of riding. Neither am I; I’m way too wussy to power through banked switch-backs. Maybe someday… We finished off on the Fairfax County Cross Country Trail. Rode a couple of miles down that to a small lake and back. The CCT connects a bunch of parks in Fairfax and also connects to a network of trails that will take you hundreds of miles all over northern VA. Pretty neat stuff. I’ll be biking more of it while the weather holds up.
Cat smells: They smell pretty much the same as after I bathed them: clean and a little musky. Ciaran’s ears are cold. They remind me of artichoke leaves.
Wii Number, Redux
Tuesday, September 18th, 2007I typed the last digit of my Wii number incorrectly before. This is because my life is a crotch!
Correct Wii Number, I hope: 8560 2573 5464 8408
Fire
Sunday, August 19th, 2007My apartment building caught fire last night. It was a few units away and a floor down. It didn’t spread very far and my home is fine. Everyone got out safely. Most of us got back in again. I don’t officially know what started it, but from watching the fire inspector take pictures I’m guessing it was electrical. The wiring here is pretty good, so I’ll further guess that it was a sparking surge protector or maybe a halogen lamp. I’ll know more when the managers send out a memo next week.
The fire department is under a mile away. They were here in a little under five minutes. By that time the unit where it started was fully involved, but the firewalls held and that was the only one to get scorched, I think. There was smoke in the unit above and in the ones on either side, but they didn’t spray any water in those. I would have expected fire to punch through the ceiling/floor of the unit above, but it doesn’t seem that it did. Not sure where that smoke came from. Again, waiting on the memo.
To repeat, I’m fine. The cats are fine. But fire, woohoo!
Las Vegas
Saturday, August 18th, 2007I posted my pictures from BlackHat 2007. I was sick for most of the trip, so the pictures are mostly of my room in Caesar’s. I think you’ll understand why I didn’t mind being ill.
Ownership (Gun)
Saturday, July 28th, 2007I am the proud owner of a Springfield Armory XD-40 semi-auto pistol. Not the Sigarms P229 I’ve been thinking about, but an excellent weapon nonetheless. I fell for it at the Nation’s Gun Show this weekend at the Dulles Expo Center. Keith pointed it out as an innovative trigger system on an American weapon (assembled in Croatia) with a warranty comparable to Sig’s. So I bought it. My decision for forego the P229 was aided by the fact that the specific model of the Sig that I wanted is hard to find and expensive to maintain, and by the light, smooth trigger pull of the XD.
I’m off to practice field stripping my gun blindfolded.
Wii-dom! (Bowels flying everywhere)
Wednesday, July 18th, 2007I am William Wallace. I have a Wii at last. I poked my head in the same old store today just as they opened their latest shipment of acrylic glory.
Thanks to everyone who look for me!
That’s all the post I have time to make. Gotta play.
Sore
Sunday, April 22nd, 2007I went hiking with Torey and Kiki, his girlfriend, and a bunch of people they know through meetup.com. We hiked up Old Rag in the Shenandoah National Park. It’s about a nine-mile trip up and down with a really fun rock scramble on the way up to the summit.
I learned that while I can walk nine miles pretty easily, climing up and down a 1700 foot vertical while walking nine miles is just a little bit beyond me. I made it, of course, but about two hours behind the pace. Torey was kind enough to hang back with me and make sure I made it down safely. I didn’t have any real problems getting up to the summit. Once we stopped for lunch, though, the muscles and tendons at the tops of my thighs cramped up and made the trip down a stuggle. I’ll go again, but I’ll drop another dime or two first and get some practice in on easier climbs.
Today, I’m sore all over. I’m going to spend the day reading and finishing up the second season of Carnivale. Oh, well shoot; I have to shower. I’m also going over to the realty office at my complex to see about buying a condo.
