ChooChoo Bear Corset

October 24th, 2007

That’s right: ChooChoo Bear Corset. Girls are lucky. Fortunately girls also look great in corsets. I think, overall, this is a win for us guys.

Judging from the other corsets in their catalog, this one – though custom invoiced – will probably run between $250-350.

Caturday Morning

October 20th, 2007

This is pretty much on the money.

Television a victim of global warming

October 17th, 2007

Fashion a Victim of Global Warming (12 Oct 2007 – NY Times, via Stuff.co.nz)

The founder of Milan Fashion Week, Beppe Modenese, told the New York Times:

The fashion system must adapt to the reality that there is no strong difference between summer and winter any more. You can’t have everyone showing four times a year to present the same thing.

He’s right, of course, and I’m concerned that this trend is also turning up in network television programming. Summer is lingering into Fall; we had a few days of cool weather this week, but now it’s hot again. Likewise, the Fall TV season has kicked off on some networks, but not others. Showtime has started their new season of shows; Heroes is back on; Comedy Central even started airing new Southpark episodes back in March they were so confused. Last year LOST had that six week break in the middle of the season. They film in Hawaii and the fall even caught them by surprise. I hope the television industry learns to adapt to the new climate conditions soon. I don’t care for these stuttered seasons.

Bioshock & Resident Evil: Extinction

October 7th, 2007

Resident Evil is just okay. Milla Jovovich is as hot as we have come to expect. She looks much cooler than she did in Ultraviolet.

Bioshock, on the other hand, just blew my mind. I thought I was finishing the game. I thought they’d just fooled me with an interesting plot twist at the end. I thought they’d just ripped off Metroid for their ending, but that was okay because it had just been awesome for 15+ hours. And then the second act began. All that stuff was just the first act! Simple decisions I’ve been making just had a huge impact on the way I’ll play the rest of the game. Holy crap I’m going to have to play at least two more times! I’m here to validate all the hype I’ve read on the tubes. Bioshock is an amazing story told as a game. I give it some gold stars and a smiley face.

Fire Alarm and Cross County Biking

October 6th, 2007

Someone pulled the building’s fire alarm at 12:30 this morning. I was still awake, of course. There was no fire; it was probably those punk kids who keep pounding on my door in the middle of the night. I practiced getting the cats into their carrier and outside, so it was a productive interruption.

I went biking this morning for several hours. A guy from work and I went to the Wakefield park to try out their trails. We started out on a mountain-bike trail that was uphill both ways. Crazy, right? My bike was not built for that kind of riding. Neither am I; I’m way too wussy to power through banked switch-backs. Maybe someday… We finished off on the Fairfax County Cross Country Trail. Rode a couple of miles down that to a small lake and back. The CCT connects a bunch of parks in Fairfax and also connects to a network of trails that will take you hundreds of miles all over northern VA. Pretty neat stuff. I’ll be biking more of it while the weather holds up.

Cat smells: They smell pretty much the same as after I bathed them: clean and a little musky. Ciaran’s ears are cold. They remind me of artichoke leaves.

Wii Jacket

October 3rd, 2007

Nintendo is offering to send free Wiimote jackets to anyone who already bought a Wii. But they just offered this today, I guess, because the website is flooded and my request timed out without giving me confirmation. Now it says I’ve already requested too many jackets and I can’t have any. Boo Nintendo! (Until tomorrow when it’ll probably all work just fine.) My sense of entitlement to products I didn’t know existed is flaring up.

Return of the cat smells

September 25th, 2007

Shelly just stuck his butt on my nose. It smells like maple syrup. No wonder cats lick their butts.

Wii Number, Redux

September 18th, 2007

I typed the last digit of my Wii number incorrectly before. This is because my life is a crotch!

Correct Wii Number, I hope: 8560 2573 5464 8408

Invites

September 16th, 2007

I have invites to pass out for different things. Comment with you email and what, if anything, you’d like. If I don’t have an invitation for what you want on the list, comment anyhow and we’ll see what we can arrange.

Joost: Internet TV service with HD content. Still in Beta so the channel selection is kind of ehn. A good deal of anime and British reality TV.  Their PR people say the major networks are on board for the launch. Until then, it’s a fun distraction.

GrandCentral: Extreme Telephone Control. For the cost of giving Google more of your personal information you’ll get a free phone number that will ring every phone you control.  If that’s too 2006, you can also conference, record, screen, and transfer calls on the fly. You can dial into your number from any phone that is handy, enter you control menus, then call people from your GrandCentral number and route the call to wherever you are. It’s sweet.

Netflix. I have a free month of Netflix to give away. I’m a heavy user of the service and can get through 16 movies in a month on my three-at-a-time, unlimited plan ($16.97 after tax). On the rare occasions that I don’t have one of their DVDs in the house, I stream movies from them over the tubes. This trial probably wants your credit card number to start it up, but you can cancel instantaneously online whenever you like (before the month is up, after it’s up, before you get your first movie, whatevs).

Fire

August 19th, 2007

My apartment building caught fire last night. It was a few units away and a floor down. It didn’t spread very far and my home is fine. Everyone got out safely. Most of us got back in again. I don’t officially know what started it, but from watching the fire inspector take pictures I’m guessing it was electrical. The wiring here is pretty good, so I’ll further guess that it was a sparking surge protector or maybe a halogen lamp. I’ll know more when the managers send out a memo next week.

The fire department is under a mile away.  They were here in a little under five minutes. By that time the unit where it started was fully involved, but the firewalls held and that was the only one to get scorched, I think. There was smoke in the unit above and in the ones on either side, but they didn’t spray any water in those. I would have expected fire to punch through the ceiling/floor of the unit above, but it doesn’t seem that it did. Not sure where that smoke came from. Again, waiting on the memo.

To repeat, I’m fine. The cats are fine. But fire, woohoo!
